The Department of Education was established
in the year 1973. Dr. Kulin Pandya was appointed as a Reader and
Head of the Department. Under his able leadership, the
department started functioning. After one year, eminent
educationist Dr. Gunvant Shah was appointed as Professor and
Head of the department. He led the department successfully, for
twelve years. Under his dynamic leadership, the department
conducted National and Inter National seminars, conferences and
workshops for teacher educators. The department was pioneer in
undertaking researches in the area of educational technology.
At present, the department offers one year
full-time course leading to M.Ed. Degree. Every year 30 students
are admitted in this course. Students are admitted on merits
i.e. the marks obtained at the B.Ed. examination. 20% seats are
reserved for the students coming from other universities. 3
seats are offered to the students on higher payment basis. The
higher payment fee is Rs. 20,000/- p.a. Regular fee p.a. is Rs.
1,500/- . reservation policy has been adopted as per the
Government rules.
Presently, M.Ed. course students have to
study five papers. Three out of them are compulsory papers and
the remaining two are optional, the name of the papers are as
under:

The students are expected to undertake one
educational research project and submit the research report in
the form of dissertation. This research work carrys 200 marks.
In all students are evaluated on five theory papers 100 marks
each and a dissertation containing 200 marks. In all the
evaluation is based on 700 marks. Out of which 30% marks are
internal marks. The marks of dissertation has been divided in
two parts. The dissertation carrys 150 marks and viva voce based
on the research work carrys 50 marks.
Apart from the M.Ed. course, the department
offers Ph.D. Degree in Education. All the six staff members are
recognised as supervisor for guiding the Ph.D. students. The
students having M.Ed. Degree in Education with minimum 55% marks
are eligible to get registered as Ph.D. student.
