The post graduate department of economics was established in the
year 1970. Since its inception, the department has been training
students for MA (Entire Economics) degree and for the research
degree viz., M.Phil. and Ph.D. The faculties of the Department
have completed a number of significant research projects.
Every year about 70 students are trained for the post graduate
degree in Economics apart from another 70 students who are
admitted to M.A. Part - I. About 7 students get admission for
the M.Phil course every year.
The present strength of the faculty is Nine who are specialised
in different branches of Economics. The various activities of
the staff members are reflected in the research project,
research articles and books that are published. With their
collective strength, the Department is able to contribute to the
academics and has worked out various new programmes for the
coming years.
The Department introdeced new master degree course on business
Economics from the academic year 2000-2001. The university
awards Master of Business Economics(MBE) those who complete the
course successfully.
The Master of Business Economics aims:
"An advance training in economic analysis and tools designed to
equip the students to comprehend the challenges of business and
management". To this end, the focus on microeconomics and other
related subjects are widely spelt in designing this course.
Further, this course insists on case studies and examples, which
place economics within a business context. The course further
insists on summer training of students at the end of which a
report need to be submitted.

Candidates desiring to apply for admission to M.A. course
should obtain the application form by paying a stipulated
fee by Demand Draft or in Cash. The application form duly
filled in all respects alongwith certified typed/ xerox
copies of the marksheets of the First Year, Second Year and
Final Year Examination passed, with attemps, if any, must
reach the University by the date announced in the
advertisement published by the University. The application
will not be entertained without certified true copies of the
Marksheets.
Requirements :
The candidate shall have to offer as principal subject
offered by him / her as Principal Subject at the first
degree, provided, however, that candidate who has passed the
degree examination in Second or First Class may be
considered eligible for admission to the M.A. Degree Course
in any subject.
A First or Second Class Commerce Graduate will be considered
eligible for admission to M.A. Degree Course in Economics.

The duration of the course shall be of two semesters (one
academic year) with permission to complete the dissertation
subsequently either as a regular candidate or an ex-student
within maximum of four semesters.
To be eligible for admission to this course in a subject, a
student must have obtained the Master's Degree in the same
subject or a degree recognised as equivalent thereto with
atleast 50% marks. Only employed person shall be eligible
for admission to the part-time course. A full-time teacher
of a college affiliated to this University shall be
considerd eligible for admission to the course in the
relevant subject. Admission to this course, shall be made on
the basis of satisfactory performance of the eligible
candidate at the Test and Viva-Voce conducted by the
Departmental Research Studies Committe/ M.Phill. Committee.
The candidate shall be enrolled under a Guide at the
University Department or M.Phill. Centre in the affiliated
college where the Guide is working.
There are two components of M.Phil. course. In the first
component candidates are supposed to study three compulsory
papers. Written examination is conducted after the
completion of the course work. The candidates are not
allowed to submit dissertation, if he fails to meet minimum
requirement of the course work.

Registration for Ph.D. Degree is generally done at any time
during the year after an eligible candidate finds a Guide
(Supervising Teacher) willing to direct and supervise his/
her research .
Number of students have completed Ph.D. in past.
M.B.E. (Master of Business Economics)
This is two years course with four semesters. Any graduate
with minimum of 50% marks with English as a compulsory
subject. There will be an entrance test for admission
followed by interview. Entrance test will be of 60 marks. It
will consist of 60 objective questions. The questions will
be drawn from General Knowledge, English, Elementary
Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and General Economics.
Personal interview will be of 40 marks.
